As mentioned above, biochar can be made from various biomass waste. Take a look around your farm and gather farm residues, and convert them into biochar using traditional biochar kilns, or opt for a more high-tech option that can easily produce high-quality biochar with minimal labor. 


After that, mix the biochar with any nutrient sources you have for the best results.


How to Apply Biochar Fertilizers

Biochar fertilizer can be incorporated into your garden in several ways:

  • Incorporation. Spread biochar evenly over the soil surface and mix the biochar into the top layer of soil (15-30 cm). Continue mixing until the biochar is well incorporated.

  • Top dressing. Sprinkle biochar on top of the soil around the base of existing plants. However, This method may take longer to show results as biochar needs to be incorporated into the root zone.

  • Banding. Place the biochar fertilizers in a continuous narrow strip dug parallel to the row of plants or around trees for perennials at a distance of 3-7 cm.

  • Spot. Create a small hole of about 10 cm diameter and a depth of 10–15 cm, add the biochar fertilizers, and cover the hole with soil.
