By avoiding plowing, natural farming encourages earthworms and beneficial microbes to thrive, improving soil aeration and nutrient cycling.

Farmers grow multiple plant species together to enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and reduce pest infestations. Intercropping and crop rotation reduce the risk of monoculture-related diseases and ensure a balanced distribution of nutrients in the soil.

Natural farming also uses green manure, which involves growing specific plants, such as legumes, and incorporating them into the soil to enrich it with nitrogen and organic matter. These plants act as natural fertilizers, improving soil structure and promoting microbial activity. As they decompose, they release essential nutrients that benefit subsequent crops, reducing the need for external fertilizers.


To amend the soil further, it’s also possible to use biochar — a carbon-rich soil amendment created by heating organic materials in a low-oxygen environment. This material enhances soil fertility by improving water retention, increasing microbial activity, and stabilizing essential nutrients. Additionally, biochar sequesters carbon in the soil, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to climate change mitigation.

By avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides, ZBNF drastically reduces farming costs while improving soil fertility and crop health. This approach is particularly beneficial for small-scale farmers looking to maintain productivity with minimal investment.

  • Initial transition period – farmers may experience lower yields initially as the soil adjusts to the new farming system.

  • Knowledge and training – success in natural farming requires an understanding of ecological principles, which may necessitate farmer education.

  • Pest and disease management – without synthetic pesticides, farmers must adopt alternative pest control strategies, which require experience and experimentation.


Natural Farming and Sustainable Goals

Natural farming aligns with the principles of sustainable agriculture, offering a viable solution to many environmental and economic challenges. 


As such, it aligns with the principles of sustainable agriculture, contributing to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2) by promoting food security and nutrition, Climate Action (SDG 13) by reducing carbon emissions and enhancing resilience, and Life on Land (SDG 15) by protecting biodiversity and improving soil health.


In India, the government promotes natural farming through a scheme called Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP). The BPKP aims to encourage traditional indigenous practices that reduce reliance on externally purchased inputs based on the ZBNF practices. It focuses on on-farm biomass recycling, mulching, and the use of cow dung and urine-based formulations.
